Sola Adebayo, former competition secretary at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, claimed victory at the 6th BON Sports Classic amateur golf tournament.
Held over two days at the IBB Golf Club, the event saw over 250 golfers compete, with Adebayo finishing on top with a remarkable gross score of 75. Playing off a handicap of 8, Adebayo credited his win to consistent practice.

A Platform for Charity

Over the years, efforts to promote the sport have increased, with events like this drawing both seasoned players and newcomers. Such tournaments provide an excellent platform to inspire young athletes and demystify the perception that golf is an exclusive sport.
The Role of Corporate Sponsorships
Corporate sponsorships have played a vital role in sustaining and elevating events like the BON Sports Classic. These partnerships create a win-win scenario where businesses gain visibility, and the community benefits through social initiatives. Bose Ngozi Onwuegbu highlighted this collaboration, stating, “We are grateful to our sponsors for their commitment to sports and social responsibility.”
Impact on Local Communities
The charitable aspect of the BON Sports Classic extends beyond just financial donations. The funds raised have been used to provide essential items such as food, clothing, and educational materials to underprivileged families. Widows and orphans have particularly benefited from these efforts, which have helped uplift their living standards. One beneficiary shared, “The support from this tournament has given my children a chance to continue their education.”
Promoting Health and Wellness
Golf tournaments like this not only focus on competition but also emphasize the importance of health and wellness. Participants often highlight the physical and mental benefits of playing golf. For many, it’s an opportunity to stay active, reduce stress, and build social connections. Events like these encourage people of all ages to consider golf as a fun and rewarding way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Looking Ahead
As the 6th edition of the BON Sports Classic wraps up, all eyes are on the future. Plans are already underway for next year’s tournament, with organizers aiming to make it even bigger and better. By building on this year’s success, they hope to attract more participants, raise more funds for charity, and continue to inspire the next generation of golfers. With such a strong foundation, the future of golf in Nigeria looks brighter than ever.
